Southeastern Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel
Adult Learner Scholarship Competition
The Southeastern Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel (SAEOPP) is pleased to announce its twenty-third annual scholarship competition. TRIO participants are invited to compete for Adult Learner Scholarship awards of $1,000.00. Also, $1,500.00 awards will be made to the five highest rated Pre-College and/or Adult Learner applicants. These awards may be used to help defray postsecondary educational costs during the 2009-2010 academic year.
Enclosed are application materials needed to apply for these scholarships. Only one application may be submitted per TRIO program, i. e., an individual project. Institutions which have more than one project (e.g. Student Support Service, Educational Opportunity Center, Veterans Upward Bound, McNair, Educational Talent Search {ETS participants age 19 and older}) may submit an application for each project.
NOTE: Institutions/Agencies that send more than one application from the same program will be disqualified
Sponsors of applicants MUST BE CURRENT MEMBERS OF SAEOPP AND THEIR STATE ASSOCIATION (SAEOPP and State Dues paid by October 31, 2009).
Applicants will be judged and rated in the following areas (See Rating Scale for Detailed Point Values):
1. Essay (content, grammar, format, etc.) (50 points)
2. Academic performance/scholarship or significant academic progress (10 points)
3. Two recommendation letters (10 points)
4. Leadership, school activities and/or detailed description of community volunteer service (20 points)
5. TRIO activities (10 points)
6. Timeliness in submission of all requested materials
Each
application will be reviewed and rated by the Scholarship Committee (and SAEOPP
Board of Directors members, if necessary). No applicant’s materials will
be reviewed by a person from the same state. Essays are independently
reviewed and ranked by three (3) outside (non-TRIO) readers. Scholarship
applications with a raw score less than 90 will not be
considered.
In order for winners to receive their monetary awards, sponsors must provide official verification enrollment in a postsecondary institution. Award checks, made payable to the student, will be initiated upon receipt of the requested documentation and forwarded to the designated mailing address.
The deadline of submission of all application materials is NOVEMBER 20, 2009. All application materials (except for transcripts) are to be submitted online . Transcripts should be mailed to the SAEOPP Scholarship Co-Chairs at:
Rodney E. Adams
Director of Retention and Federal TRIO Programs
Technical College of the Lowcountry
PO Box 1288
Beaufort, SC 29901-1288
SAEOPP will not send confirmations. If a confirmation of transcript receipt is desired, the applicant should send materials by certified mail-return receipt requested, or by such other mailing source that requires a signature at the time of delivery.
